In C++ programming, the ampersand symbol (&) acts as a powerful, multi-functional tool that directly interfaces with the computer's memory. Depending on its syntactic context, it performs two fundamentally different operations: acting as the address-of operator or defining a reference. The Dual Identity of the & Operator
The complexity of the & operator often stems from its placement. When used in an expression, it retrieves a memory address. When used in a declaration, it creates a new name for an existing object.
The Address-of Operator (&variable)
When the ampersand precedes an already declared variable in an expression, it functions as the address-of operator. Its purpose is to return the hexadecimal memory address where that specific variable is stored in the hardware's RAM.
